Google!! Get on this!!

May 07 2009 | will

So, the Globe is dying and print is becoming 'obsolete' beyond those who will continue to get their news from it for the aesthetic.  Twitter is the new thing, and if you haven't tried it...just try it.  It's okay.  I know everyone is doing it, but that does not always make something trite.

Do you want to know what I would like to see happen next?  If you do, keep reading.  If you don't then, great.  Twitter is a bit of information over-load.  If you're like me and you're using Twitter as a news source, you probably find that it's redundant to varying degrees from day to day.  I don't particularly get any satisfaction from logging into my twitter account for the headlines, yet I feel the need to keep checking back in because I know that Twitter will have the headline first.

Rather than checking in with Twitter for my news, I would prefer to have some program that bases itself off of the popular search terms function you see on the right side of Twitters home page. The program would email/text/whatever me when a certain keyword has crossed a threshold of popularity.  Like Manny Ramirez today.

Regardless, the important thing to take away from Twitter and Facebook and all that business is this:  Now, more than ever, we have an infrastructure that is just itching for a monumental news story.  The media we, as people, would be able to produce documenting a natural disaster, a terrorist attack or screw it, MOLE PEOPLE is staggering.  We, as a species, have made a tremendous leap in self-preservation and group communication with this.  Is that a little freaky to anyone?  Comforting?  I don't know.  Personally, I would love to be waiting in line at Dunkin' Donuts and feel my phone buzz and read the text, "Twitter: Aliens Have Landed".  I'd still get my coffee.
